FileZilla: CSR Creation Using OpenSSL

  1. Generate Ssh Key For Filezilla Mac
  2. Create Ssh Key Linux
  3. Generate Ssh Key Aix

Run it on your local computer to generate a 2048-bit RSA key pair, which is fine for most uses. Ssh-keygen The utility prompts you to select a location for the keys. By default, the keys are stored in the /.ssh directory with the filenames idrsa for the private key and idrsa.pub for the public key. Generate ssh key. Filezilla can use existing ssh key, but cannot generate ssh key itself. You can generate ssh key with putty or openssh. (now openssh is built-in in windows.) putty: use GUI program PuTTYgen to generate ssh key. To create a new key pair, select the type of key to generate from the bottom of the screen (using SSH-2 RSA with 2048 bit key size is good for most people; another good well-known alternative is ECDSA).

Use these instructions to build your own shell commands to generate your FileZilla CSR.

We recommend that you save yourself some time and use the DigiCert OpenSSL CSR Wizard to create your FileZilla SSL CSR. It’s as easy as filling in the certificate details, clicking Generate, and pasting your customized OpenSSL command into your into your terminal.

If you already have your SSL Certificate and just need to install it, see FileZilla: SSL Certificate Installation Instructions.

How To Generate a CSR for FileZilla Using OpenSSL

If you prefer, you can build your own shell commands to generate your FileZilla CSR.

  1. Use your terminal (ssh) to login to your FileZilla server.

  2. At the prompt, enter the following command, making sure to replace server with the name of your server:

openssl req –new –newkey rsa:2048 –nodes –keyout server.key –out server.csr
  3. This starts the process for generating two files:

    • The Private-Key file for the decryption of your SSL Certificate.

    • A Certificate Signing Request (CSR) file, used to apply for your SSL Certificate.

  4. When you are prompted for the Common Name (domain name), enter the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) for the site that you are securing.

Note: If you are generating a FileZilla CSR for a DigiCert® Wildcard Plus™ Certificate, your common name should begin with an asterisk (i.e. *.example.com).

  5. When you are prompted, enter your organizational information beginning with your geographic information.

Note: You may have default information set already.

This creates your OpenSSL .csr file.

  6. Open the .csr file with a text editor.

  7. Copy the content, including the BEGIN and END tags, and paste it into the DigiCert Certificate order form.

  8. Save (back up) the generated .key file. You need it later for your SSL Certificate installation.

  9. After you receive your SSL Certificate from DigiCert, you can install it.

See FileZilla: SSL Certificate Installation Instructions.

You generate an SSH key through macOS by using the Terminal application. Once you upload a valid public SSH key, the Triton Compute Service uses SmartLogin to copy the public key to any new SmartMachine you provision.

Joyent recommends RSA keys because the node-manta CLI programs work with RSA keys both locally and with the ssh agent. DSA keys will work only if the private key is on the same system as the CLI, and not password-protected.

About Terminal

Terminal is the terminal emulator which provides a text-based command line interface to the Unix shell of macOS.

To open the macOS Terminal, follow these steps:

  1. In Finder, choose Utilities from the Applications folder.
  2. Find Terminal in the Utilities listw.
  3. Open Terminal.

The Terminal window opens with the commandline prompt displaying the name of your machine and your username.

Generating an SSH key

An SSH key consists of a pair of files. One is the private key, which should never be shared with anyone. The other is the public key. The other file is a public key which allows you to log into the containers and VMs you provision. When you generate the keys, you will use ssh-keygen to store the keys in a safe location so you can bypass the login prompt when connecting to your instances.

To generate SSH keys in macOS, follow these steps:

Filezilla
  1. Enter the following command in the Terminal window.

This starts the key generation process. When you execute this command, the ssh-keygen utility prompts you to indicate where to store the key.

  2. Press the ENTER key to accept the default location. The ssh-keygen utility prompts you for a passphrase.

  3. Type in a passphrase. You can also hit the ENTER key to accept the default (no passphrase). However, this is not recommended.

You will need to enter the passphrase a second time to continue.

After you confirm the passphrase, the system generates the key pair.

Your private key is saved to the id_rsa file in the .ssh directory and is used to verify the public key you use belongs to the same Triton Compute Service account.

Never share your private key with anyone!

Your public key is saved to the id_rsa.pub;file and is the key you upload to your Triton Compute Service account. You can save this key to the clipboard by running this:

Importing your SSH key

Now you must import the copied SSH key to the portal.

  1. After you copy the SSH key to the clipboard, return to your account page.
  2. Choose to Import Public Key and paste your SSH key into the Public Key field.
  3. In the Key Name field, provide a name for the key. Note: although providing a key name is optional, it is a best practice for ease of managing multiple SSH keys.
  4. Add the key. It will now appear in your table of keys under SSH.

Troubleshooting

You may see a password prompt like this:

This is because:

Generate Ssh Key For Filezilla Mac

  • You did not enter the correct passphrase.
  • The private key on your Macintosh (id_rsa) does not match the public key stored with your Triton Compute Service account.
  • The public key was not entered correctly in your Triton account.

In order to use the Terminal to create instances, set up triton and CloudAPI as well as the triton-docker commandline tool.
